Information about the School – King Edward VI Academy

King Edward VI Academy is a much smaller than average bilateral school in a selective area. The majority of students are White British and speak English as a first language. Very few have minority ethnic backgrounds. The proportion of students known to be eligible for free school meals is broadly average. The percentage with special educational needs and/or disabilities is much higher than the national average – about one third of all students have either learning or behavioural-related support needs. A higher than average proportion of students join or leave the school at times other than the beginning and end of the school year. The school gained specialist status for humanities in September 2005, and the Healthy Schools award in 2008. It has the leading role in an extended schools partnership and works with three others in delivering diplomas in land-based and environment, hair and beauty and engineering. Since September 2009, the school has had an unprecedented number of long-term staff absences.
