How are Independent School 11 Plus Maths tests different from Grammar School 11 Plus tests?

Most Independent School Maths tests are set by the school. Parents who are trying for both an Independent School and a Grammar School should ensure their preparation covers the syllabus in a broad way. Children will normally face a mixture of worded Maths problems and calculation problems. Pretty much every Independent School Maths test focusses on the Primary School Syllabus.

Where Independent School tests do vary then it is at the end of the test where they ask a number of harder questions to see how children can adapt their skills to different situations. Some of these questions they may expect only one child in a thousand to get right, but what they are looking for is how you approach the problem and how you think. This is the key difference between Independent School tests and others. Teachers will actually consider how you have attempted some of those harder questions even if you have got them wrong.

For children trying for a scholarship it is worth trying some of these harder problems to get your head around what is expected.
